Register Now! More about this year's honoree Dr. El-Erian was born in New York in 1958, and lived in Egypt as a young child. His family moved back to New York in 1968 when his father took a position at the United Nations representing Egypt. Dr. El-Erian later completed his undergraduate studies at Cambridge University, and earned his master s degree and doctorate in economics from Oxford University. From 1983 to 1997, he worked for the International Monetary Fund. Subse- quently, Dr. El-Erian served as managing director at Salomon Smith Barney/Citigroup in London. Dr. El-Erian has published widely on international economic and finance topics, including “When Markets Collide,” a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller. He was named to Foreign Policy Magazine s list of “Top 100 Global Thinkers” each year from 2009 through 2012. Dr. El-Erian has served on several boards and committees, including the U.S. Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee, the International Center for Research on Women, the Peterson Institute for International Economics and the IMF s Committee of Eminent Persons. He is currently a board member of NBER, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and Cambridge in America.
